Red Writers is a new writing scheme developed by Red Ladder to encourage new and emerging writing talent. This year the Red Writer's Commission has been given to Ben Tagoe. Ben's new play 'Bittersweet Sunshine' will be performed by Red Grit artists at a new work festival, Emerge (21-26 June) at the Carriageworks Theatre, Leeds.
" I'm really excited about working with Red Ladder and, in particular, writing for the Emerge festival. I think it's fantastic that Red Ladder is developing actors with schemes like Red Grit and it's also a great opportunity for me as a writer."
Ben is originally from Perth, Scotland and moved to Yorkshire in 2002 to take his place on the BA (Hons) Creative Writing degree programme at Bretton Hall (University of Leeds). During his first year at Bretton, Ben received a BBC Alfred Bradley award for his radio script ‘Keeping it up with the Joneses’.
Ben has worked on a number of creative community projects as a freelance artist and his educational play ‘Fields and Dreams’ toured South Yorkshire schools in 2006. He was involved in the set up of Leeds-based Landfill Productions in 2007 and made his first short film in 2008. As well as dramatic writing, Ben works as a freelance marketing copywriter and has produced scripts and copy for a number of internet virals, radio adverts, brochures and websites.
